How much average paint for an Airbus?

Postby CaptainChas » July 28th, 2010, 2:39 pm

On a recent flight a young man asked me an interesting question:

Just how many gallons of paint does it take to paint an Airbus?

I was flying an A319, but it would be interesting to know on other models, too, not just the A320 series. For example - just how much paint does it take (on average) for an A380?

Anyone have any idea?

:eusa-think: :confusion-confused:

Lufthansa provide a"A380 Special LH Magazin"

...
Lufthansa snow-white is applied to the more than 3500-square-meter surface of the A380.
Primer and glossy coats together weigh 650 kilos and are only 0.2 mm thick.

After some research, it appears that an A320 takes anywhere between 70-90 gallons of paint, with an average around 80 gallons for a paint job like Virgin America's.

As a side note, a Boeing 747 can be painted with as little as 90 gallons of paint...
