Returning to the site of the DC6 crash, “Resolution”, is always a bit of a solemn experience. The remnants of the aircraft still remain right next to the trail, and other hikers have collected small pieces of the aircraft on a rock and left them there. On January 12, 2012, I returned along “Resolution Trail” found in the El Corte Madera Open Space Preserve. I couldn’t help but pause for a few minutes to think of all those aviators that went before us, and path to safety they created in blood.
The rest of the trail run was split into two parts – some yesterday, and some today. Disappointingly, I forgot to turn the GPS on for today’s run, so I only have the trail marks from yesterday’s run/hike with my girl. The elevation change was brutal.
Our routes over the two days included Methusela, Tafoni, Fir, El Corte De Madera, North Leaf, South Leaf, Resolution, Virginia Mill, Gordon Mill, Timberview, and Giant Salamander trails. All were in excellent shape.
The difficulty of the routes, however, is not for the faint of heart. On a mountain bike it might not be bad, but the elevation starts at 2,000 feet at Skyline Blvd (although the highest point is at 2,200′), and drops to 750′ near the bottom. Here are details to the trail head from bay area hiker:
From CA 92 in San Mateo County, turn south onto Skyline Boulevard (CA 35). Drive about 8.5 miles (about 0.25 mile past Skeggs Point), and park in the pullout in front of the CM02 gate, on the right side of the road.
